4th International Congress on Applied Ichthyology, Oceanography & Aquatic Environment – HydroMediT 2021: 46 hours of live streaming with amazing content!
With more than 45 hours of live streaming and 185 presentations of scientific papers the 4th International Scientific Congress on ‘Applied Ichthyology, Oceanography & Aquatic Environment – HydroMediT2021’ took place virtually, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with great success from the 4th to the 6th of November 2021. The Scientific Congress was organized by the Department of Marine Sciences – University of the Aegean, the Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment – University of Thessaly, the Department of Animal Production, Fisheries & Aquaculture Department – University of Patras, and the Panhellenic Society of Technologists Ichthyologists (PASTI).
More than 500 attendees from 15 countries, among other practitioners from the fields of Fisheries, Oceanography and Aquaculture as well as academics, and young researchers and students participated in the Congress sessions through their screens, focusing on the eight main fields of scientific interest: Aquaculture, Fisheries, Oceanography, Marine Diversity and Conservation, Inland Aquatic Ecology and Resources, Processing of Aquatic Products, Economics and Marketing of Fisheries Products, and Environmental Management and Education.
At the comfort of their own personal space and protected from the pandemic Covid-19, participants had the opportunity to watch high-quality scientific works, and more in particular the 85 analytical announcements (oral presentations) and the 100 short announcements (e-poster presentations).
Addiotionally, the scientific congress attendees had the chance to enjoy the outstanding presentations of the invited speakers. At his Keynote Lecture, the distinguished Professor Alberto Basset of the University of Salento, addressed the state of the art scientific results on Biodiversity, Ecosystem Services and Natural Capital of the Mediterranean Transitional Ecosystems. Among the Invited Speakers of the Congress were Dr. Graham John Pierce of the Fisheries Institute of Marine Sciences (CSIC) in Spain, Dr. Paolo Guidetti of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn Research Institute in Italy, Prof. Samuel Martin of the University of Aberdeen, UK, and Dr. Joaquim Garrabou of the Institute of Marine Sciences (CSIC) in Spain. Dr. P. Guidetti elaborated on the need to have more ‘strictly & seriously’ Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in the Mediterranean Sea, while Dr. G. Pierce spoke about Cephalopod Fisheries in European Waters: Stock Assessment/Forecasting and Management. Professor S. Martin stressed the important role the Mucosal Surfaces play as the First Line of Defense in Fish, while Dr. J. Garrabou addressed the hot topic of the Climate change and how this affects species and habitats in the Mediterranean Sea.
